Short and Long Vowels Worksheet (Set 2) – Grade 1

Say each word and decide whether its vowel sound is short, like cat, or long, like cake, then write short or long. The easy sheet compares short-vowel words with silent-e words (cap / cape); the hard sheet uses blends and digraphs for the short sounds and vowel teams and open syllables (rain, boat, seed, go, me) for the long sounds. The answer key names the vowel.

Answer key included at the end of the PDF

What kids practice

  • Hear whether a vowel sound is short or long
  • Know that a silent e usually makes the vowel say its name
  • Recognise long vowel sounds in vowel teams such as ai, ee, oa, and ue
