Add and Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators Worksheet – Grade 5

Add and subtract fractions whose denominators are different, like 1/2 + 1/6 and 3/4 − 1/6. On the easy sheet one denominator goes into the other (halves and sixths, quarters and eighths), so only one fraction has to change. On the hard sheet neither denominator goes into the other, like 3/4 + 2/3 or 5/6 − 3/8, so kids find a common denominator for both, never bigger than 24. Every answer is written in simplest form, and a sum bigger than 1 can be written as a mixed number, like 17/12 = 1 5/12.

What kids practice

  • Find a common denominator for two fractions with different denominators
  • Rewrite each fraction as an equivalent fraction over the common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators
  • Write the answer in simplest form, as a mixed number when it is bigger than 1
  • Check that an answer makes sense, for example that 1/2 + 1/3 is less than 1
