Roman Numerals Worksheet – Grade 4

Read and write Roman numerals, the way they appear on clocks, chapter headings and monuments. The easy sheet uses only I, V and X for the numbers 1 to 39, both ways: XIV = 14, and 23 written as a Roman numeral. The hard sheet adds L (50) and C (100) for the numbers 40 to 100, with the take-away pairs IV, IX, XL and XC, like 94 written as a Roman numeral, and asks which of two numerals is bigger. Standard spellings only, so every question has one right answer.

Answer key included at the end of the PDF

What kids practice

  • Know the symbols I, V, X, L and C and their values
  • Read a Roman numeral as a number, adding the symbols and taking away a smaller symbol placed before a bigger one (IV, IX, XL, XC)
  • Write a number from 1 to 100 as a standard Roman numeral
  • Compare two Roman numerals and say which is bigger
