Why this matters
Picture the shape moving
Spatial reasoning is the skill of moving a shape in your head â turning it, flipping it, even folding it â WITHOUT actually picking it up.
You already use it every day: fitting a backpack into a tight cubby, spotting your shoes that are facing the wrong way, lining up a puzzle piece. Engineers, surgeons, gamers, and architects all rely on this skill.
There are three moves you can make in your head. Master these three and most spatial puzzles open up.
- ROTATE â spin the shape around a fixed point.
- MIRROR â flip the shape so left becomes right (or top becomes bottom).
- TRANSLATE â slide the shape to a new spot without turning or flipping it.
