The big idea
Things have groups
Look around your room. Toys go in the toy box. Books go on the shelf. Dirty clothes go in the laundry basket. Each thing has a GROUP it belongs to.
Sorting things into groups is one of the most useful brain skills. Doctors, librarians, scientists, even kids cleaning their room β everyone groups things to make life easier.
To group well, ask: "What kind of thing is this?" Once you name the kind, you know where it goes.
- A GROUP is a bunch of things that share something in common.
- Most things belong to MORE than one group (a banana is yellow AND fruit AND food).
- Sorting starts with naming what KIND of thing each item is.
