A long, long time ago
Around 5,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians lived along the Nile River in Africa. They farmed, traded, built cities, and wrote on stone tablets with pictures called hieroglyphs.
The pyramids
Egyptians built huge stone pyramids as tombs for their kings (called pharaohs). The biggest pyramid was so tall it stayed the world's tallest building for almost 4,000 years!
Cats were sacred
Egyptians LOVED cats — they believed cats were magical. They drew cats on the walls of tombs and even mummified some pet cats so they could journey to the afterlife.
