Earth spins one full turn in 24 hours. So mapmakers divided the world into 24 TIME ZONES — one per hour of rotation. Going EAST = add 1 hour per zone. Going WEST = subtract 1.
When it's noon in London, it's breakfast in New York and evening in Tokyo.
